Josh Hutcherson Talks The Hunger Games: Catching Fire with Ryan Seacrest

In a recent interview with Ryan Seacrest, Josh Hutcherson shared his experiences in working with Jennifer Lawrence, kissing her, and Peeta and Katniss' relationship in Catching Fire.

On Catching Fire's plot and working with other actors:

“I think in [Catching Fire] the story kind of opens up a lot. There’s a lot more interesting plots that start to develop and everything kind of thickens and we sort of just up the overall feel of the movie.”

“I mean, we kept the same idea of the first with the whole world,” Josh adds. “But we kind of bumped it up a little and made it a little more immersive, but it’s really great. [And] we stayed true to the book as always.”

“We got some amazing actors to come in [like] Philip Seymour Hoffman. It was pretty incredile to work with all these guys.”

On Peeta and Katniss' relationship:

“I can’t divulge any kind of plot details, but it’s up and down. Katniss and Peeta’s relationship is very complicated. It has a lot of little things that need to be worked out, but it’s good. People, I think, will be very satisfied with it.”

On kissing Jennifer Lawrence:

And speaking of on-screen relationships, Josh dished on what it’s like to kiss someone for “work.”

“I’d say there’s a natural stirring that happens in your body,” the actor laughs. “If you’re in the moment and you’re in the scene, then naturally whatever naturally happens is what’s supposed to happen.”

In the recent MTV Movie Awards, Alan Ritchson, who plays District 2 tribute/victor Gloss, was able to talk about some of his experiences filming The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

“No hazing, fortunately,” he said, laughing. Instead, he described “Catching Fire” as a great place to be, adding, “But to be a part of that, it was pretty cool. Jennifer’s star just continued to rise, even through production…it was just cool to be there.”

And not only was Alan not put through the wringer by his co-stars, he said that everyone, particularly the fantabulous Stanley Tucci (with whom he did his pre-Games interview scene), was “super-generous and giving.”

Meanwhile, the actor says that the scenes he’s most looking forward to seeing on the big screen are the same one the fans are likely clamoring for: the highly anticipated action sequences from the 75th Hunger Games.

“We shot some cool scenes,” he said. “I like the really physical kind of action stuff. I spent months training for this stuff, fight training, and becoming a dagger specialist. All those things in the arena are going to be a lot of fun.”

Catching Fire is Very True to the Book According to Elizabeth Banks

In a recent interview (with Variety) while accepting her award at the CinemaCon, Elizabeth Banks, who plays District 12 escort Effie Trinket, was able to chat about The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. According to her:

“No huge surprises. Effie has a heart that grows multiple sizes. We’re true to the book. Hopefully we’re delivering to the fans. That’s what they want.” Of course, “I spent a lot of time in the hair and makeup trailer, and every day we had that ‘ah-ha’ moment.”

In his visit to the Philippines for a clothing endorsement, Liam Hemsworth was able to share his experiences working with co-star Jennifer Lawrence and his upcoming movie "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire."

Liam on Jennifer:

She’s one of the most energetic, fun-loving people I’ve ever met. Working with her on set is just easy because she’s so good and she’s just won all these huge awards so congratulations to her for that. She’s amazing.”

On his character Gale in CF:

“My character [Gale] gets whipped in this one. So I spent a couple of days on my knees getting whipped, which was pretty horrific.”

On Catching Fire:

“There’s a whole lot of great stuff in ‘Catching Fire.’ The characters are developing more; (director) Francis Lawrence had a whole new take on it.”

In a recent interview with Collider, Stanley Tucci, the actor who plays flamboyant host Caesar Flickerman in "The Hunger Games" franchise, talks about directors Gary Ross and Francis Lawrence.

COLLIDER: Jumping into something else, The Hunger Games switched directors to Francis Lawrence and I’m curious what was it like working with him on the next film? 

TUCCI: He was great, he’s lovely.  I think Gary [Ross] did such an amazing and Gary’s such a nice guy.  They’re very different directors and personalities.  Gary’s very garrulous and Francis is very quiet, but he’s very talented and I had a really nice time with him. 

COLLIDER: Obviously people have read the book, but what can you tease people about the next one? 

TUCCI: [Laughs] I can’t, I really can’t, I’m sworn to secrecy number one, but also you have to remember I’m only there for a week and I shoot all my stuff on a stage and then that’s it, so I’m not even privy to what’s going on. 

COLLIDER: The Hunger Games is a huge franchise now. Were there any difference for you in terms of when you’re making the first one you’re not really sure if anyone’s going to come out for the movie, then it comes out and it’s this massive hit. Did you feel any pressure going back for the sequel?  Or was it sort of like you did it and you can do it again? 

TUCCI: Yeah, I think that’s what you feel, you just want to do it as well again, that’s all.  You never want to rest on your laurels.  You just want to give it 100% every time.

I got some good news to you tributes. 

First, Liam Hemsworth was able to talk to Vanity Fair about Catching Fire. The Australian actor was also able to share his experiences of having multiple jobs (which you might not actually imagined that he did) before landing an acting role. Sam Claflin on Finnick Odair and His Training for Catching Fire

Sam Claflin was able to discuss his role as Finnick in "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," how he trained, and his reactions when he first knew he got the role. Watch the video below and see Sam discuss those things in his photoshoot with Teen Vogue.

TEEN VOGUE: Aloha, Sam! Congratulations on scoring the role of Finnick Odair. How did this all go down?

SAM CLAFLIN: Yeah, so they decided to go with me as opposed to any of the other young, hot, good-looking actors out there. [Laughs] I auditioned like everyone else. I didn’t know what it was for before I went in, and I hadn’t read the books. Looking at the page with a character named Finnick, I was like, Who the heck is Finnick? And then I saw Katniss on the page, and I was like, Ahh, OK, maybe this is The Hunger Games. Then they decided they would dye my hair blonde, and presto, there’s your Finnick Odair!

TV: Do you like your blonde hair?

SC: It’s definitely taking some getting used to. I have a tan and a six-pack now after four months of hard work. I feel slowly but surely like I am Finnick Odair.

TV: Your training sounds intense!

SC: From the moment I set foot in Atlanta, they had me at the gym, working out twice a day. And then stunt training, it’s nonstop. To be fair, I spend a lot of the film carrying an old lady on my back, as Finnick carries Mags for the majority of the arena scenes. I feel like every day of filming is a workout, running around Hawaii with little old Lynn Cohen on my back. As for my diet, I think I’ve eaten more chickens than there are in the world. [Laughs] I would eat chicken and asparagus for lunch and dinner, and for breakfast I’d have an omelet and oatmeal. And I had that every day for four months. I’ve talked to my friends and said, “Oh my God, I’m so depressed, I just want a burger.” And they’re like, “You don’t know how lucky you are to be doing what you are doing.”

TV: What makes Finnick such a great character to play?

SC: There are so many complexities to this character. Finnick has a tempestuous relationship with Katniss—she trusts him one minute, and the next she doesn’t. I love their relationship. Together they eventually realize they need each other to survive, and that is beautiful.

TV: What can we expect from Finnick? Can you give us a little teaser?

SC: All I can say is I try very hard and hopefully I won’t disappoint people. He’s a very charming physical being, and hopefully he will be exactly what people read in the book and I won’t be doing an injustice. I purposefully did not want to watch anything I’ve done so far; I actually don’t like looking at my face, so I don’t like watching myself on the screen. It’s an insecurity thing I have. I’m somewhat of a perfectionist, I think, and I strive for perfection. The reason I’m an actor is because I’ll never be able to be perfect. I hope people enjoy my interpretation. Hopefully we’ll make a bigger and better one this time around.

Philip Seymour Hoffman on the Goodness of "Hunger Games" to the Kids and Taking the Role of Plutarch Heavensbee

In a recent article from the Wall Street Journal, Philip Seymour Hoffman was able to share why he became attached to the story written by Suzanne Collins in her trilogy "The Hunger Games." He was also able to discuss why children should be able to know the story despite the "children killing children" part of the story. He then discussed why he accepted the role of Plutarch Heavensbee, the new head gamemaker and replacement to Seneca Crane, who died at the end of the first book. 

On the story of "The Hunger Games" trilogy:

“It’s unbelievable what this woman has done,” the actor said in an interview. “She literally tells our modern history of war and the awful things that have happened through these science-fiction novels. In the modern day, we send children off to die to protect our way of life, basically. It’s very powerful the way she does it.”

His amazement at Collins’s books made him say, “I’m in. I want to be a part of that,” he said. Despite the film’s bloody premise, he said the full story gives a very different message than simply “kids who kill each other.” According to him, if the films are done well, they are something kids should see.

On his role as Plutarch:

“I’m looking forward to the next two [films], because his job becomes very different,” Hoffman said of Plutarch’s role. “The story becomes very different and everyone will see what happens.”

Sam Claflin Talks About Finnick, His Costars and More Catching Fire Experiences

On his character Finnick:

I mean for me, I was already kinda cast! He definitely stuck out somewhat but for all the wrong reasons. Very selfishly, that was the only character I really cared about [laughs]. But the great thing about the books is that Suzanne Collins created these great arcs for each and every character, no matter, I mean from Katniss all the way down to her sister, to her mother. You know, each character goes on a journey. And I think that’s what’s so riveting about the books themselves.

 On meeting the expectations of fans:

 I mean I have to say the pressure is on. I mean, I’m a member of Twitter and especially when it was first announced there was a huge backlash. Some positive and some very negative. You know people were sort of saying they wanted to kill themsleves and that I wasn’t anywhere near good-looking enough. Everyone has their own perceptions of what a good-looking person is and basically all I can do is do my best and you know, you have to kind of not read the bad press or whatever. You have to keep focusing and working hard and the moment you channel that out I just had fun really. And it was hard work, it was definitely, definitely hard work. I was eating chicken and asparagus twice a day, every day. Not including all the other meals I was forced to have each day. And then working out two or three times a day. I didn’t really have a life but when I was on set there was a great dynamic between the cast and crew and when you’re on a set in the middle of Hawaii, you don’t really care about what other people think [laughs]. I enjoyed the moment when I was in the moment. You know, I’m still reading negative feedback but what can I do – I can’t change my face! [laughs]

On meeting Director Francis Lawrence:

He was one of the first people I met when I arrived in America. And we had a sit down, we talked through the script, about the novels, about the previous film. I know he wasn’t the director on that but we talked about the flaws and ways of improving or developing the characters’ arc. And obviously the unfortunate thing about a film version is that they are trying to make this accessible to a younger audience, therefore there are certain aspects that you can’t include. One being Finnick Odair wearing just the net or just a knot covering his crotch. That was something that we couldn’t, unfortunately, include. But, you know, I’m scantily clad and hopefully people will still be happy!

On working with his costars:

It’s one of these things that gets through you, goes straight through you. I mean, Stanley Tucci, Woody Harrelson, Philip Seymour Hoffman, even with Jennifer Lawrence who’s just won a Golden Globe and what have you! I am lucky enough to be surrounded by some of the best actors that are living.

On the accidents in filming Catching Fire:

There really has. This is a question I don’t really know how much I can talk about. I was specifically asked not to mention some of the accidents that happened on set. All to do with me, I have to say… Let’s just say I am a very, very clumsy person. There was fall, after fall, after fall, after fall. We basically, me and Francis the director, we were laughing that there would be a DVD extra, a whole DVD on it’s own for the blooper reel – just for me! Because every time he’d say action, just before we had to a fight, I would flip over or fall. And even when I was standing still I’d manage to fall over. There were plenty of accidents.

Toby Jones: Catching Fire Has Different Visual Sense Compared to "The Hunger Games"

In the recent Golden Globes, MTV has interviewed Toby Jones, who plays arena announcer and Caesar Flickerman's partner Claudius Templesmith. Mr. Jones was able to share some Catching Fire bits as well as about his character on the film.

On the difference between "The Hunger Games" director Gary Ross and "Catching Fire" director Francis Lawrence:

"It's a very different rhythm he works at. A whole different visual sense that people will be excited about," Jones told MTV. "There's a whole different way of showing the film that I can't really talk about. There's a very interesting way that they're going to dramatize the Games themselves."

On her small screen appearance on Catching Fire:

"I'm afraid so," Jones said when asked if his role in the new "Hunger Games" film is the same size as it was in the first one. "I'm there because my kids love the book. There's no huge revelation about my character. My kids are happy that I'm in the film. It means they get to go touch the hem of Jennifer Lawrence's garment. That's why I'm there!"

On Sam's Catching Fire training:

Claflin brings dimples and green eyes naturally to the role of Finnick. But to otherwise ready himself, he spent months eating nothing but chicken and asparagus. “It’s depressing,” he sighs. “I just want a burger and beer.” 

On his transformation - tanning and dying his hair

He dyed his hair blonde and endured the indignities of spray tanning. “Look at the tanlines on my fingers!” he says as he shows off his peeling brown knuckles. “I’m very English. I’m white. I mean I’m so pale. With spray tans they start peeling and start getting really dirty looking. It’s kind of lucky for the arena because I’m dirty a lot of the time but it’s not great with my shirt off at the moment.”

On the sugar cube scene with Katniss:

Catching Fire Update: Chracters Who Will Not Be in the Film; Sam's Casting as Finnick and A Lot More

In the exclusive Catching Fire issue of EW, fans will be delighted or be surprised to hear some tidbits about "The Hunger Games" sequel. The  news include the characters who will not be able to get into the film, casting, script, and a lot more. Jennifer Lawrence on her first conversation with Francis Lawrence: 

“He’s really smart, and he has a very gentle way about him. He’s really passionate about the book. It didn’t seem like he was just excited to make a huge movie.”

Jennifer on playing Katniss: 

Gary Ross told her Katniss is a hunter. “I didn’t feel like an action star, I didn’t feel like a superhero. I felt like a hunter. That helped keep it grounded in this reality of, she’s good at this not because shes a trained killer but because she a 16-year-old girl who happens to be great with her senses.”

Jennifer on her favorite day of Catching Fire filming:

“We were shooting on this beautiful beach, and there were sea turtles everywhere. In between takes Josh and Sam and I were running and jumping in the water. I was like, “I’m getting paid to do this?! This is awesome.”

Sam Claflin on his Finnick audition:

“Finnick is this tanned, green-eyed sex god. I’m thinking, ‘I’m brunet, I have loads of stubble’, and at the time I was by no means in shape. This guy walked in just after my audition who looked like Brad Pitt in Thelma & Louise. I thought, ‘Yeah, I’m not going to get this.’”

Nina Jacobson on casting Sam Claflin:

 “Sometimes you get someone with the swagger but not the soulfulness, or the other way around. Sam had both. He is such a sweet, sweet fellow.”

Francis Lawrence on creating a new vision: 

“I thought there were a lot of opportunities for the costumes, especially in the Capitol, to go crazy, to have fun, but in a very sophisticated way.” Enter The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo costume designer Trish Summerville. Lawrence also wanted to tinker with the cinematography (“It doesn’t always have to be desaturated and grey”) and brought in a new visual-effects supervisor, Janek Sirrs (The Avengers).

Nina Jacobson on getting Philip Seymour Hoffman on board: 

“We went and saw him on Broadway, where he was doing Death of a Salesman. It took a lot of patience to get him to focus and read the book, because we didn’t have a script yet. But we really wanted him because we wanted everybody to know that yes, it’s a new director, but our standards are just as high and we’re still aiming for Oscar-caliber actors.”

Michael Arndt and the script: 

“The first third of the book is a lot of zigzagging”, says Jacobson. “We go on tour, we’re at the Capitol, we’re back home, then Katniss spends a lot time in her head thinking”. Jacobson hired screenwriter Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3) to streamline the story and enliven its emotional core. “Michael turned in a first draft, and suddenly you could see it all”, says Lawrence.”

 On the the characters that will not be in the movie:

Lawrence says he and Collins were always in agreement about what from the book needed to be distilled, though he was coy about cuts. When asked, for instance, whether we should expect to see Bonnie and Twill — the District 8 runaways Katniss stumbles upon in the woods who first alert her to both the rebellion she inadvertently sparked and the existence of District 13 — he at first demurred. “You’ve got to wait and see,” he urged. But when it was pointed out that there is in fact no Bonnie and Twill listed on the movie’s IMDB page, he gave it up. “Ah, right,” he said with a laugh. On how the movie will now introduce District 13, Lawrence would only say that “it was fun figuring out new ways around things and new ways of doing things.” With Bonnie and Twill gone, so too is the scene of Katniss scaling a tree and then leaping over District 12′s electrified fence. And Darius, District 12′s youngest peacekeeper who intervenes during Gale’s whipping and then sentenced to the life of an Avox, is another who didn’t make the leap from page to screen.

Josh Hutcherson Spills Some Catching Fire Filming Secrets (Videos)

Josh Horowitz of MTV has recently interviewed Josh Hutcherson during the Thanksgiving. Josh was able to share his embarrassing moment on the set, some additional info about the cornucopia, and filming some scenes using IMAX.

Josh's pants was ripped off down to his crotch while proposing to Katniss.

"I have proposed to Katniss," Hutcherson confirmed. "It was good. Actually, funny story: When we shot it, the actual proposal itself is done where you don't hear what we're saying, so I was just saying gibberish while I was proposing to her on one knee. Actually, the very first time I went to get down on one knee my pants ripped right down the crotch. The worst thing that could happen when you're proposing to somebody is that your pants rip right down the crotch, and that's what happened to Peeta. So... he's doomed. He's doomed. Poor guy, he just can't catch a break."

On his favorite scene to shoot so far:

"The Reaping stuff was really great. The Reaping stuff we did was really powerful, really well written," he recalled. "The extras were so awesome. Like, literally, every extra was a very, very talented actor, and so in the really emotional scenes, all the background really brought their A-game. It really added a lot. That was really cool to see that all come together."

On the cornucopia:

"They actually built a cornucopia in Atlanta that we shot at, and it looks amazing, and the way that the spokes got out, and the way everyone comes up on the pedestals and the water — it looks incredible," he gushed. "I've seen some of the CG renderings that [director] Francis [Lawrence] has worked on, and they look really, really great."

Shooting arena scenes in IMAX:

"They're shooting, I think, all the stuff in the arena is going to be IMAX," Hutcherson said. "So when you go see it in IMAX, you'll see the regular movie when we're in the Districts and in the Capitol. When you see us go up in the pod in the games, it will open up into IMAX. It will be amazing. It's very cool."

Jennifer Lawrence Confirms Catching Fire Filming in Hawaii and Reunion with the Cast and Crew

In a recent interview with ET, Jennifer Lawrence has confirmed the start of Catching Fire filming in Hawaii (probably in a week or so). She also mentioned how fun it is to be reunited with the cast and crew again.

“Yes, now we’re shooting in Hawaii. It’s actually really … it feels normal. It’s so bizarre, I think because everybody’s kind of the same, and seeing the whole crew back, and it’s like a little reunion. It’s really fun.”

 In another interview with Vulture, Jennifer also gushes about her excitement in filming Catching Fire in Hawaii and the Cheesecake Factory.

“It’s freaking Hawaii! I’m looking forward to everything,” she said. “And I just heard there’s a Cheesecake Factory, like, right down the street, part of the Trump, and that’s got me really, really excited. Don’t say Trump because I have no idea what I’m saying. But, yeah, so that has me excited. I think I’m the only American that really loves Cheesecake Factory and totally stands by it.”

ET has recently interviewed Toby Jones, who plays arena announcer Claudius Templesmith, about Catching Fire. The actor talked about "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" script, working with Stanley Tucci in front of a green screen and being part of a huge franchise.

ETonline: And then you have on-set photos coming out in the middle of production as paparazzi swarm the set. Now that it’s become such a successful and watched franchise, does makingCatching Fire feel any differently now than making The Hunger Games did.

Jones: Not so far. We’re blessed with, as we were on Harry Potter, lead actors who are amazingly grounded people. Jennifer [Lawrence] is amazingly grounded in the midst of all this to do. It must be unnerving and hard to relate to the amount of attention she generates. She and Josh [Hutcherson] seem very, very grounded. They’re getting down to the film like they did last time.

ETonline: As one of the few people who has read the Catching Fire script, what do you make of it?

Jones: It’s a bit of relief, I must say. I was worried it might just be repetitive, but it’s not. The script is just tremendous!

ETonline: Is it odd being a part of this massive production, yet pretty much only working with one other actor in front of a greenscreen?

Jones: Totally. But that’s how it felt doing [the voice of] Dobby as well. You come in as this satellite part of the film, so I only see Stanley [Tucci] in my scenes. These kinds of movies have so many different components; it’s about as different from doing The Girl as you could imagine.
