Catching Fire Won't be Filmed in Kauai, Hawaii, The Honolulu Star Advertiser Reports

Despite the rumors in the past few weeks that Kauai might be a potential location for filming Catching Fire, the Honolulu Star Advertiser has ended such talks. In their recent publication they said that:

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" will not be filmed on Kauai as mentioned here last week. Christina Gizoni, a Lionsgate representative, said in an email: "While we have not yet released the filming locations, Kauai will not be one of them." Further comment was not forthcoming.

Note: Until Lionsgate has not released any official press release, let's not consider this as final.

Catching Fire Will be Filmed in Atlanta and Kauai, Hawaii (Update), New Production Designer

I have two Catching Fire filming location news for you. In case you haven't heard, it's been reported that Catching Fire will be shot in Atlanta and then in Kauai, Hawaii. As for the Atlanta filming, Kate Emery, an Art PA and Florida State University Film School alum, has confirmed that she has been asked to be involved in the art department for the Catching Fire production. Here is her statement at the Florida State University Film School Network blog:

From Kate Emery (MFA 10) “Not more than an hour after the numbers officially came in for the Hunger Games opening weekend, production designer Philip Messina asked me to come back for the sequel, Catching Fire. I’ve been on as Art PA for about three months now and I’m having a blast. We’ll be in preproduction for a few more months and then we’re going to shoot in Atlanta. Francis Lawrence (I am Legend, Like Water for Elephants) is directing and our new costume designer is Trish Summerville (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). Together with Phil they’re taking the story in an exciting cinematic direction. I’m thrilled to be so involved in the project and can’t wait to see our work spring to life in Atlanta! Look for Catching Fire on November 22, 2013”.

Thrish Summerville won the a Costume Designers Guild Award for her work on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. She would presumably be taking the place of The Hunger Games costume designer Judianna Makovsky. (Thanks thehob.org for the heads up!)

On the other hand, the official website of Kauai, Hawaii has confirmed that there were several film scouts who were considering the island for the movie. Here is their statement:

With the recent big screen hits “The Descendents” starring George Clooney and “Pirates Of The Caribbean On Stranger Tides” with Johnny Depp, today’s announcement doesn’t come as too much of a surprise. Hollywood movie scouts have chosen the Garden Island of Kauai as one of the filming locations for the movie based on the trilogy by Suzanne Collins, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”

Film scouts have been searching out locations within the Hawaiian Islands and have zeroed in on Kauai. With the natural beauty, rugged terrain, isolated valleys, lush green jungles, turquoise waters and wildlife, it is no wonder Hollywood has again made a smart choice in picking Kauai.

“Catching Fire,” Finnick Odair and the Third Quarter Quell is set to hit theaters late November 2013.

Catching Fire Might be Filmed in Kauai, Hawaii, Might Return to Henry Mill Village in NC

Kauai, Hawaii
Lionsgate has been so tight in releasing any tidbits from the upcoming sequel of the Hunger Games which is officially named as "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire." According to our friends from thehob.org, Catching Fire might be shot in Kauai, Hawaii based on the tweets from North Carolinian anchor Russ Bowen. Here are his tweets for the past few days.

  • “Hearing conflicting reports that #catchingfire folks are here in Asheville Let’s hope so and NC gets to be a part of filming again”
  • “I’m not sold on the word that #catchingfire folks are here in Asheville too many conflicting reports”
  • “Sources close to #Catchingfire tell me Kauai most likely shooting site for arena. To be shot last three weeks of filming #hungergames” [photo of Kauai above]
  • “Lionsgate photographer recently visited Henry River (The Seam). Shooting there likely early fall. #catchingfire #hungergames“
As for now, there's still no official reports or announcements about the filming locations as well as the actors. (Oh my God Finnick!) Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence both hinted about Hawaii in their separate interviews. The potential Atlanta filming is still not official. But for those who are wanting to be part of the movie as an extra, I think you should prepare yourselves already.

Looking at the picture above, Kauai might be a good spot to shoot the arena scenes. I can't to wait to see the scenes from the book into the silver screen.

PS: Mr. Bowen has also tweeted about the vandalism in Henry Mill Village, specifically at the Mellark's Bakery:

  • “Location of Mellark’s Bakery in Henry River Mill Village vandalized. Not Cool. Don’t ruin it for everyone else #hungergames #catchingfire“
  • “someone stole the “p” in pastries.”
I don't think true fans can do all that vandalism stuff. I don't know maybe there are just people out there who can't keep themselves from writing on the wrong places. If you find someone who are ruining something important in the Hunger Games fandom, please approach them in the right way without triggering a fight.
