Elizabeth Banks on Effie's Costume in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

In an interview with The Advocate, Elizabeth Banks was able to gush about Effie's costumes and wigs  in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Here's an excerpt of the interview:

Have you ever played a lesbian?
I don’t think I have — although Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games might be gay. My vision of the Capitol is pansexual like ancient Rome, where everybody’s doing everybody.

Any chance she’s a drag queen?
I’ve actually thought about that. I think Suzanne Collins created the character to be nurturing and mothering in her own way, so she’s probably a woman. But I definitely saw a lot of drag Effies last Halloween in West Hollywood!

Are Effie’s wigs and outfits in Catching Fire even more outrageous than in the first film?
They really are. We relied a lot on Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen for the costuming, so there’s some amazing, handmade, one-of-a-kind couture. I feel so honored to have worn these pieces of art.

Effie’s serving Nicki Minaj meets Frenchy from Grease in Catching Fire promo photos.
There’s some of that, true, but she changes quite a bit and has a more varied palette this time around. You haven’t seen her more fabulous stuff yet.

What advice would you give a guy who wanted to dress up as Elizabeth Banks for Halloween?
Just look really tired and maybe stick a baby on your hip. That should do it. I’m an exhausted mom with two very young children, so I’m not very fabulous right now. But Halloween is one of my favorite holidays; I’m a pagan at heart.

Capitol Couture Portraits - Effie and Caesar

Guys, here are the portraits released by Capitol Couture. Do you remember the one with the chair with the hashtage #ladiesfirst? The date mentioned was March 4 and so the first portrait to appear was Effie Trinket sitting on the green chair! The next one was Caesar Flickerman sitting on a old whitish chair. I was totally shocked with the hair! It feels like the hair was kissed by Nicki Minaj! Anyway, take a look at the portraits below.

Effie Trinket (District 12 escort)
Caesar Flickerman (Hunger Games host)

Who's portrait will come next? Any guess? What do you think of their hair and costume?

Elizabeth Banks: Effie Will Have Bigger and Better Costumes in Catching Fire

Elizabeth Banks has talked about Effie's costume and role in Catching Fire in her recent interview with Collider while promoting her new flick "Pitch Perfect." Here is an excerpt from that interview:

Now that you know what to expect from The Hunger Games fandom, what’s it like to gear up for that again with Catching Fire?

BANKS: I’m really happy that I don’t look like Effie Trinket, in real life. That’s a blessing! It’s really fun to go into a job knowing everybody. (Director) Francis Lawrence is amazing, and he’s got a great handle on everything and everybody. The stakes are definitely raised, in this one. The emotional stakes are raised. My costumes are all bigger and better and more over-the-top. Everybody is pulling out all the stops. We have so many amazing new actors coming to work with us. I just met Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and that was like, “Wow, we’ve got some really amazing actors joining us! That’s crazy!” It’s great. I’m super excited. I love Effie so much.

Will there be more of a human side to your character, this time around?

BANKS: In Catching Fire, Effie really starts to feel the injustice of what’s happening. We plan to explore that, in the movie.

Elizabeth Banks Talks About Catching Fire Casting, Being Effie, and Francis Lawrence

Moviefone recently caught up with Elizabeth Banks when she is in the middle of promoting her latest flick "People Like Us." She talked about Francis Lawrence and Gary Ross, Catching Fire Casting and being Effie. The following is an excerpt of her interview:

There was a tizzy over who would direct the second movie of the Hunger Games trilogy, “Catching Fire.” Are you upset that Gary Ross isn’t returning as the director?

No! I mean, Gary is on to do things that he’s really interested in. I think it was a mutually agreed-upon decision by all involved, and, so, great. There are no tears for Gary.
So are you looking forward to working with Francis Lawrence?

Yes, I am. I don’t want to be flippant about what I just said about Gary. He made a great movie, he made a lot of money, he’s moving on — I think it’s fine for everybody. He’s good, and now we’ll get fresh eyes on the next one, and that’ll be really exciting. And it’s always exciting for actors to create new relationships with new directors. Gary and I made two movies together and I would do anything with him, but now I’m excited to get to know Francis.
Some major new characters are introduced in “Catching Fire”: former tributes Johanna and Finnick. Casting rumors are flying. Is there anyone in particular that you’re lobbying for?

I’m gonna trust the process, because so far the process has been amazing and I think it’s yielded an incredible cast. The movie is so well-cast, and I’ll even throw myself into that mix. There’ll be a similar process and we’re gonna get a great Finnick and a great Johanna. And a Plutarch! Don’t forget! There’s so many great characters coming up.

Your Effie was great. Which character was more of a challenge for you, Laura Bush in “W.” or Effie?

You know, Effie is a much darker character. Laura Bush actually was fairly easy in that she was just a great wife. There was no political context for her. The transformation was pretty easy. I actually feel like if I had that hair, I would look like her in a way. She’s a nice looking lady.
So Effie, for sure, was more difficult. Effie walks a very fine line and I wanted her to not just be comic relief, I wanted her to have a lot of weight and to sort of carry the weight of the Capitol around with her, like the oppression of the Capitol and for everyone to understand that she is a woman living in fear.
Effie was amazing. It was amazing to be embraced by so many fans, and to have Suzanne Collins tell me that she thought I did a good job. That was a big highlight for me.

Elizabeth Banks on the Dark Side of Hunger Games and Her Character Effie

Here is Buzz Sugar's interview with Effie Trinket, I mean Elizabeth Banks:

As a parent, did you have any reservations about The Hunger Games's dark subject matter?

EB: The movie is going to be PG-13, and I think that's about right. My nephew's 11, and he read it and loves it. The book has adult themes, for sure. Gary Ross, the director, and Suzanne Collins [who wrote the novels] did a great job patrolling what happens visually in the movie, what we can show and what we can't show. But I remember taking my 6-year-old niece to a Harry Potter movie with those dark shadow things that were scary as sh*t, and the guy doesn't even have a f*cking nose. That's like nightmare stuff, in my opinion. This is a lot of hand-to-hand combat, but it's nothing you wouldn't see on a video game or an episode of CSI. We don't have guns.

What was it like making the transition from The Hunger Games to What to Expect When You're Expecting?

EB: They're just so different, it's literally night and day. I don't have the same voice, I don't have the same hair, I don't have the same anything. Literally nothing, it's completely and utterly opposite. The good thing about this is that it's a role much closer to myself, so it's easier.

What helps you get into character?

EB: Well what's great about both of these characters, Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games, and Wendy, is that there's so much external stuff to build the character with. Effie has the great wigs and the crazy clothes, and the accent, and all that. That's all something that really helps feed you. And this character has the boobs and the bump and the back pain, and the shoes that don't fit, and all of those things that really feed you in the moment, which is great. It's a lot easier than having to come up with a bunch of emotional sh*t that you have to deal with from internally. They're nice characters that you build from the outside in, instead of from the inside out.

Hunger Games Cast in Empire Magazine

Here are a couple of stills from the upcoming Hunger Games film. These were taken from the iPad version of the Empire Magazine from UK.

The first still features Effie (busy with her make up retouch thing) with Haymitch and Peeta on the background. Based from this still, I think this might have been taken from the Tribute train heading to the Capitol. Haymitch is having a small chat with Peeta and I think he's talking about Effie. Bad Haymitch. Oh and there's an inset of President Snow.

The next still is from the Girl on Fire, Katniss Everdeen. Actually, she's not in fire with this one. She's spotted on 12's electric fence with her hunting attire on. Katniss is wearing her father's jacket and ready to enter the meadow. Her outfit is a manifestation of District 12's poverty as opposed to the rich and glamour of the Capitol. And something bothers me about the belt. LOL

These towering 24-Karat front-zip booties on Miss Effie Trinket, as she greeted her District 12 Tributes at the Capitol Train Station.

Capitol Socialite
 Spotted!

Yummy grosgrain peep-toes on one of the Capitol’s favorite socialites. Just how black were they in person? Coal-black. A sure sign of the District 12-inspired fashion revolution we predict is just around the corner.

Tribute Boots

Spotted!

The roughest and tumblest boots we’ve ever seen on one of this year’s darling Tributes. Bravo to District 8’s stylists for stepping it up this year. Those boots will hold up in any Arena.

CityCircle Waitress shoes

 Spotted!

Cute-yet-daring periwinkle peep-toes on a charming City Circle waitress. Dare we ask where she got shagreen leather? Looks like someone paid a visit to District 4.

Seneca Crane's shoes

Spotted!

This year’s Head Gamemaker, Seneca Crane, did not disappoint in these impressive Cordovan equine leather balmorals.

Capitol Citizen's shoes

Spotted!

Pink gladiator heels on a Capitol citizen just outside President Snow’s mansion. Where are the fashion Peacekeepers when you need them?

What do you think of these shoes?

Hunger Games Animated GIF - Effie in Action with Peeta, Katniss, and Haymitch from Capitol Couture

Yesterday, CapitolCouture has opened officially. The admins of the website already published some posts like their search for the next District 12 stylist. Head over at http://www.capitolcouture.pn and use the access pass #lookyourbest. If you have a tumblr account, you can follow Capitol Couture and be updated all the time. If you want, you can also add me there at http://www.hungergamesmovieseries.tumblr.com.

Anyway, I reposted the animated gif featuring Effie, Katniss, Peeta, and Haymitch (Effie is on the spotlight with her beautiful shoes). Based on this animated gif, Haymitch is drunk again (as usual). They are heading off to the elevator and I guess the scene maybe before the Tribute Parade. Peeta and Katniss are wearing their tribute attire, you know the tight black suit. I am super excited to see how the film will interpret Katniss' Girl on Fire costume during the parade. Whew. Anyway, here is the animated GIF.

I hope Capitol Couture will have lots of contests that will let fans win fabulous Capitol fashion items or premiere tickets perhaps. That would be great!
