Willow Shields Talks About Prim in Catching Fire

We are Movie Geeks (WAMG) has talked to Willow Shields and the actress was able to gush about Catching Fire as well as the maturity of her character Prim in the movie.

WAMG: What was it like making the second Hunger Games film?
WS: It’s exciting. I’m not as nervous as I was when I was making the first film. I know the cast already and everyone’s welcoming and knows each other, which is convenient. My character is getting a bit bigger so I’m a bit nervous about that.
WAMG: Does your character have a more prominent role?
WS: There’s going to be four films, so Prim’s role is going to get bigger and bigger.
WAMG: How much bigger is the role in the second film than the first?
WS: Just a little bigger now, but by the third film, it will have developed quite a bit more.
WAMG: Have you started filming parts three and four yet?
WS: Not yet. I’m not sure when we’re starting those. It’s in pre-production now. We’ve been doing some costume fittings and stuff.
WAMG: Was the second film also filmed in North Carolina like the first?
WS: No, it was filmed in Atlanta and Hawaii.
WAMG: Why was that?
WS: The second story’s games take place in a tropical arena so they went to Hawaii.
WAMG: Are you good friends with Jennifer Lawrence? Are you guys like sisters in real life?
WS: Yeah! We hung out at the premiere and recently and Comic-Con

WAMG: And you have a new director with part 2. What’s the difference between the directorial style of Francis Lawrence and Gary Ross, who directed the first one?
WS: There isn’t really much of a difference. The fans loved the first movie and Francis did a terrific job on the second. I loved working with Gary Ross but Francis was great too. He was really welcoming to the whole cast and I’m sure the fans will love the second movie as well.
WAMG: Have you ever met Suzanne Collins (the author of the Hunger Games novels), and if so, what did she have to say to you about the character of Prim?
WS: I’ve met her two or three times and she’s super-sweet. She told me the first I met her that I was the perfect Prim and that she couldn’t imagine anyone else in the role. She has such a love for writing and it’s fun just to talk to her about her writing and she was super-excited that I was cast.
WAMG: I haven’t read the books. Do you think she’ll ever write a fourth or fifth book, or has the story pretty much ended?
WS: No, the story is over. She’s not going to write another one.
WAMG: Are there some big stars that are in the second movie that were not in the first movie?
WS: Yeah, Phillip Seymour Hoffman is new to the series. A few others.
WAMG: Did a lot of girls audition for the role of Prim?
WS: I don’t know. The director told me that he was really excited that I had the role and that he had auditioned quite a few actresses for it and that I was definitely the perfect one, but I never heard how many girls actually tried out for the part.

WAMG: Do you have some other movie roles coming up that you have committed to?
WS: I have one that I’m committed to right now, but I’m not sure when they are going to start filming.
WAMG: There’s a lot of violence towards teenagers in the Hunger Games films. Was that something you or your parents were concerned about?
WS: No, that wasn’t an issue. When you read the books, at least for me, it’s not so much about the violence at all. I mean there’s that idea there, but there’s so many other aspects to the story, like how Catniss is fighting for her family, how there’s Pita and Gayle and all these different things so you’re not thinking about the violence so much.
WAMG: Have you seen the new movie?
WS: I have seen it and I’m getting ready to go to the London and L.A. premieres. I knew it was going to be incredible, but it’s just a great movie.
WAMG: Better than the first one?
WS: No, there are different aspects to each movie that make them different. They’re both equally incredible.
WAMG: Are you getting recognized a lot? Any weird encounters with fans?
WS: I’m getting recognized but not a ton. I haven’t had any weird encounters though sometimes little girls will recognize me and cry.
WAMG: You’re on the cover of the new Seventeen Magazine. What was that like?
WS: It was fun! I got to go to New York for the first time which was amazing. It turned out great and I’m excited!
WAMG: Good luck with HUNGER GAMES CATCHING FIRE and enjoy the rest of your visit to St. Louis
WS: Thank you!

Willow Shields Talks Prim, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and Team Katniss with Twist Magazine

Twist has talked to Willow Shields wherein the young actress talks about her interest in playing Prim, bonding with actors on set and a lot more. Read the following excerpt below:

TWIST: What’s your favorite thing about Prim?
WS: I really loved that she loves animals so much, because I really love animals, too. I have three dogs, a cat and fish. I also used to have chickens, so you can see how much I love animals.

TWIST: Was it hard to get into such an emotional place for the reaping scene?
WS: Not really. Once you get into character and once you have such incredible actors and actresses like Jennifer Lawrence and Elizabeth Banks around you, that really makes it a lot easier.

TWIST: Did you grow close to any of the actors who won’t be returning to set?
WS: Yeah, I really grew close with a lot of the tributes ’cause we were actually there at the same time. I grew really close to Amandla Stenberg, who plays Rue, Jacqueline Emerson, who plays Foxface and Isabelle Fuhrman, who plays Clove. I’m really sad that they’re not coming back, but I’m also excited to work with new people.

TWIST: After playing Katniss’ sister, do you feel like a sister to Jennifer Lawrence?
WS: Definitely. We’re totally like sisters. We had so much fun on set together and we bonded right away.

TWIST: Team Gale or Team Peeta?
WS: I’m team Katniss. Everyone thinks of the book being such a romance and thinks that there’s such a huge love triangle, but I don’t think of it that way. I think of Katniss fighting for her family and being a strong character for young girls.

TWIST: When do you start work on Catching Fire? What can you tell us about it?
WS: I’m gonna be starting work on it this fall and I’m looking forward to it so much.

Willow Shields Talks About Prim, The Hunger Games and Catching Fire with SheKnows

SheKnows has recently interviewed Willow Shields, the actress from New Mexico who plays Prim in The Hunger Games, about her role and fashion. Here's an excerpt from the interview.

SheKnows: The Hunger Games has turned into such a huge phenomenon! Were you a fan of the series before you auditioned for the role or Primrose Everdeen?

Willow Shields: I was actually just starting the books when I got the role. I was in the middle of reading the first book when I got the audition, so I was becoming a big fan and I was really excited about getting an audition for a role that I'd read about in a book!

SheKnows: This was such an amazing breakout role for you. Looking back on the experience, what was your favorite part of working on The Hunger Games?

Shields: My favorite memory was probably just hanging out with Jennifer [Lawrence] and acting with her because one minute we were really serious and crying in one scene and then the next minute we'd be laughing and playing jokes on each other.

SheKnows: That sounds so fun! So would you say Jennifer was like a big sister for you on set?

Shields: Definitely. She's so nice and such an incredible actress and we really bonded on set, so we definitely basically became sisters on set.

SheKnows: The Hunger Games on DVD comes out this weekend, and we're super excited! Can you tell us what's next for your character in the next movie, Catching Fire? [SPOILER ALERT!]

Shields: Prim kind of starts to grow up in Catching Fire and she has a little bit of a bigger role. Prim is just devastated when she finds out that Katniss has to go back into the Games so I think it's a really interesting time for Prim... I think it's going to be interesting to have to play a role like that.

SheKnows: Who was your most fashionable cast mate for The Hunger Games?

Shields: I thought Amandla [Stenberg] had awesome style, especially for her age -- I think she was only 12 when she started shooting. I remember every day I'd see her she'd have a different hat on and these cute outfits.

Willow Shields Excited to Grow Up With Prim in The Hunger Games Movies (VIDEO)

Willow Shields, the lucky girl who plays Katniss' younger sister Prim in the Hunger Games movie series, has chatted with MTV during the 2012 Comic Con International in San Diego, CA. In the interview, she mentioned that she has no idea on the exact filming date for Catching Fire, adding that she hasn't receive any script yet. She was also able to cite a scene in Catching Fire that she is looking forward to film. She was also excited to grow up on screen as her character Prim would be. Here is MTV's interview:

Willow Shields

"We heard rumors about fall, but we're not exactly sure when," she told MTV News at San Diego Comic-Con. "It's still a secret from me too."

There isn't a script yet (at least that Shields has seen), but she said just reading the novel version of "Catching Fire" has given her a good idea of what to expect. Even though she's not sure what will or won't make the final cut, Shields knows the scene she's most excited about.

"It's a scene where Haymitch, Peeta and I are sitting around in our new house and we're stuffing our faces with candy and making fun of Katniss, and I just think it would be a really fun scene to do because we're just goofing around and having fun," Shields said. "And although Katniss gets mad at us, we're still having fun, so it would be a fun scene to shoot plus I would be able to shoot a scene with Josh and Woody Harrelson, so that would be really fun."

Shields has three more "Hunger Games" movies to look forward to, so we couldn't resist asking what she's most looking forward to in her character arc. Like Daniel Radcliffe, Kristen Stewart and many before her, Shields is just happy to grow at the same rate as her character.

"I'm excited to grow up with Prim's character, because, you know, I have basically three more movies, but I'm going to be 15 or 16 by the end, but I started off when I was 10," she said. "So it's going to be really interesting to go start to finish and just to see what a difference my acting has become, and just growing up with that character is going to be really fun."

Hunger Games' Willow Shields Talks about Being Prim and Her Filming Experience

EW's Inside Movies has recently talked to 11-year-old Willow Shields, who will play Katniss' sister Prim. Read the article below and get to know more about this rising star.

Willow Shields, the 11-year-old actress who makes her big-screen debut as Katniss Everdeen’s sister Prim in The Hunger Games, hadn’t quite finished the first book when she got the audition for the role. Why? Her mother, who was already a huge Hunger Games fan, wouldn’t let Willow and her twin sister read the book until they turned 11. “We weren’t really allowed to read it before because it’s a little violent in some parts,” Willow tells EW. “But we just looked at it like the story’s more about Prim and Katniss and Katniss fighting for her sister and her mom.”

Willow taped an audition from New Mexico, where she still lives, and flew to L.A. a couple of weeks later to read the scene in which Prim says goodbye to Katniss as she leaves for the Games, for director Gary Ross. He pretty much told her she had the part on the spot. Once she got to set, which scene was Shields most nervous to film? And who is her dream costar after she wraps on Games? Click through to find out.

Shields says she was most nervous to shoot the Reaping, which took five or six days in total, because it was such an important scene. Ross encouraged her to trust her instincts. “I think he was trying to leave it up to me how I thought Prim would act in that situation,” she says. “Before the Reaping, she’s super nervous. I could never imagine thinking that you’re gonna go to the Reaping and if you get chosen, then you have to go fight to the death. For a 12-year-old girl, that’s crazy. The thought of her being chosen, and then her sister taking her place, [so she's] thinking that her sister would never come home — it’s crazy to think that that would really happen.” (Like Prim, Willow isn’t made for the arena: Ask her what she would want parachuted to her, and the only answer she can come with is “no weapons.”)

While Shields bonded with Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss) between scenes on set — “We would always goof around and make jokes to try to lighten the mood” — she spent a lot of her downtime with the younger actors playing Tributes in the film, whether at set school or swimming to cool off after a day of shooting or training in 100-degree heat. She grew close to Amandla Stenberg, the actress who plays Rue. “We’ve both got these really emotional scenes,” she says. “That actually helped me and Amandla bond in our own way, doing those types of scenes and connecting with Jennifer and the character Katniss.”

Shields is looking forward to shooting the next Hunger Games film, and dreams of working with Meryl Streep. In the meantime, the “huge Harry Potter fan” who saw the last film in that franchise the day it hit theaters is ready to be a moviegoer again. “I’m gonna go to a midnight showing [of The Hunger Games] here in New Mexico with a couple of my friends and their parents, so that should be super fun,” she says. “I’m super excited about that: my first midnight showing ever! We’ll see how that goes,” she laughs. We think she’ll be able to stay awake through it. “Yeah, probably,” she giggles.

Lovely Young Ladies of Hunger Games - Behind the Scenes for their Seventeen Photoshoot

Here are two footage featuring the lovely young ladies of Hunger Games Willow Shields (Prim), Amandla Stenberg (Rue), Isabelle Fuhrman (Clove), Jacque Emerson (Foxface), and Leven Ramblin (Glimmer). Watch and learn how to they prepare for their roles as well as their fashion style!

We hung out at the studio all day with the girls, who had a blast trying on different looks and rocking out to Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Adele.

“Some of these girls are like my sisters,” Jacqueline said. “So it was so great to be able to have dance parties and just kind of dance around.”

… ”I’m definitely a shoe person,” Isabelle said. “I wear high heels every day, I’m not even kidding.”

“The audition process was really cool,” she told us. “I was so excited because I’d read the books and I was dying to audition. Luckily I was able to channel all that nervous excited energy into this ferocious Glimmer energy. That worked in my favor I think.”
Leven also talks about the training she had to go through for the role.
“I just had some pretty hard core fights, like combat fights and if your wrist slips one inch too far you’re going to get punched in the face,” she said. “I was actually thrown on accident by a tackle and went pretty far. And it was kind of scary.”
