The Hunger Games' Amandla Stenberg and Jackie Emerson Make it to the 74th Annual Popcorn N Roses Rising Star List

Amandla Stenberg and Jackie Emerson were able to the 74th Annual Popcorn N Roses Rising Star list because of their participation in the blockbuster movie, "The Hunger Games." Amandla Stenberg played Rue while Jackie Emerson played the elusive Foxface. According to Popcorn N Roses:

#6 Female Rising Star of 2012: Jacqueline Emerson

HOT POINTS:

* Featured role in one of the hottest movies of the year, “The Hunger Games”
* Has her own YouTube channel promoting her music career
* Very active in charity work

Jacqueline is completely unlike her ruthless, conniving “Hunger Games” character Foxface, and that’s a good thing…trust us. Although the film was Jackie’s first major film role, we’re betting that it’s only a launching point for her career. Her YouTube channel shows off her music very well; she’s also a gifted vocalist. And she’s also done voiceover work in the past, providing various voices for the 2004 TV series “Father Of The Pride”. She’s got a good head on her shoulders, she knows what she wants when it comes to a career, and she’s taking the point and making it happen..and it couldn’t happen to a more talented and deserving young lady.

UPCOMING PROJECTS:

“Son Of The South” – a period drama about the civil rights movement, Jacqueline has a featured role

#2 Female Rising Star of 2012: Amandla Stenberg

HOT POINTS:

* Has one of the most pivotal roles in the spring smash “The Hunger Games”
* A huge career in commercials leading to acting success
* Started her career as a child model for Disney

Amandla plays Rue, the little girl whose demise triggers a major uprising in the spring hit “The Hunger Games”. With almost no lines – her character is seen a great deal of the time and not heard, which makes even more impressive that she takes over her part of the film, and the chemistry she has with her co-star, 2011 #3 Female Rising Star Jennifer Lawrence, is utterly amazing. With a very successful print ad career AND a very successful commercial career as well already under her belt, it’s only a matter of time before this 13 year old beauty takes off towards major stardom.

UPCOMING PROJECTS:

She has none announced at the moment, presumably because she’s also a full-time student. But we’ll be watching her every move over the next couple of years because she’s just AWESOME!

Odessa Students Skype With Hunger Games Star Amandla Stenberg

Read an article below and watch the video of Odessa students talking to Hunger Games movie's Rue, Amandla Stenberg.

Souce: http://www.newswest9.com/story/18558960/odessa-students-skype-with-hunger-games-star

ODESSA - Hunger Games fever has hit the Basin. The sensational movie and book has generated fans across the globe. In Odessa, a group of elementary kids got a chance of a lifetime to speak with one of the stars from the movie.

Amandla Stenberg played "Rue" in the movie. When they first heard the news, the kids had a hard time believing what they were going to do.

"Oh, I thought she was kidding at first," Ireland Elementary Student, Javorian Jackson, said.

"I kept thinking this is not real but yeah I didn't even know that I had been entered into the contest," Ireland Elementary 6th grade teacher, Tabitha Rosales, said.

Scholastic's had a contest going on and they had automatically entered Rosales into the contest after she bought several of the Hunger Games books.

"Scholastics had notified me that I had been entered into a Skype contest and I had won," Rosales said.

On Friday, students got a chance to talk to Amandla one on one and ask her questions, about how the movie was made, what she liked the most and about the other characters. Overall, the kids loved the experience and will never forget it.

"I'm excited, I am sad that it's over now but it was really awesome! I loved it," Ireland Elementary Student, Audrey Lujan, said.

"I learned a lot of stuff I wouldn't know," Ireland Elementary Student, Alexis Ramirez, said.

Kids Choice Awards: Amandla Stenberg on 'The Hunger Games' and who she wants slimed

Fresh off a box office bonanza and worldwide obsession come to life, "The Hunger Games" was well represented on the orange carpet Saturday at Nickelodeon's 2012 Kids' choice Awards.

Amandla Stenberg, who plays Rue in the dystopian film, looked chic and glittering in gold Kate Spade oxfords and a sparkly black and gold dress. In light of her once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of a high profile flick, the young actress had only positive things to say about her cast when she spoke to Zap2It, yet did reveal some devious hopes for potential KCA slime victims.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing people get slimed tonight," says the 14-year old actress. "I'm hoping Alexander Ludwig, who plays Cato, will get it. We're always making fun of each other so I'll be like, 'Okay, hey, this is payback.'"

Despite this anticipated green vengeance, Stenberg also expressed a deep love for her fellow Panem dwellers.

"Working with the everyone couldn't have been better," Stenberg tells us. "We all got along great."

The impact of early success hasn't been lost on the charming starlet, as Stenberg also acknowledged the gratitude she felt for fans who'd reached out and applauded her work.

Says Stenberg, "I'm just really grateful...They're so sweet. I get so many messages from people who said I did a great job."

Following "The Hunger Games," the teen actress' next role won't be another major motion picture. Instead, Stenberg, whose name means "power" in Zulu, will be doing her part to help kids around the world.

"I'm hoping to be doing more [acting projects], but right now I'm working with a lot of charities," explains Stenberg. "One is called No Kid Hungry, and it helps to make sure all kids are getting enough to eat. I'm also helping with the Ubuntu Foundation, which helps poor kids in South Africa."

Hunger Games's Amandla Stenberg Responds to Racism Attacks Over Twitter

Amandla Stenberg is one dignified 13 year-old.

The adorable actress memorably played Rue in The Hunger Games, which opened last weekend to rave reviews and a staggering $155 million box office. But the young star's triumphant turn as the District 11 tribute (and ally to Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss) was nearly spoiled, thanks to a slew of shocking, racist tweets by supposed fans of Suzanne Collins' young adult novel.

On Wednesday, Stenberg spoke out on the controversy. "As a fan of the books, I feel fortunate to be part of The Hunger Games family," she told Us Weekly in a statement. "It was an amazing experience; I am proud of the film and my performance. I want to thank all of my fans and the entire Hunger Games community for their support and loyalty."

Stenberg and costar Dayo Okeniyi (who played District 11's Thresh) were shockingly attacked on Twitter over The Hunger Games' opening weekend. While both Rue and Thresh are described as having "dark brown skin" in the book, some clueless fans objected that both Stenberg and Okeniyi are black.

One bigoted fan complained, "Why does rue have to be black not gonna lie kinda ruined the movie."
Tweeted another: "Why did the producer make all the good characters black?"
Several tweeters even used the "N" word decrying the casting of the two stars.
Through his rep, actor Okeniyi had no comment about the controversy.

Lovely Young Ladies of Hunger Games - Behind the Scenes for their Seventeen Photoshoot

Here are two footage featuring the lovely young ladies of Hunger Games Willow Shields (Prim), Amandla Stenberg (Rue), Isabelle Fuhrman (Clove), Jacque Emerson (Foxface), and Leven Ramblin (Glimmer). Watch and learn how to they prepare for their roles as well as their fashion style!

We hung out at the studio all day with the girls, who had a blast trying on different looks and rocking out to Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Adele.

“Some of these girls are like my sisters,” Jacqueline said. “So it was so great to be able to have dance parties and just kind of dance around.”

… ”I’m definitely a shoe person,” Isabelle said. “I wear high heels every day, I’m not even kidding.”

“The audition process was really cool,” she told us. “I was so excited because I’d read the books and I was dying to audition. Luckily I was able to channel all that nervous excited energy into this ferocious Glimmer energy. That worked in my favor I think.”
Leven also talks about the training she had to go through for the role.
“I just had some pretty hard core fights, like combat fights and if your wrist slips one inch too far you’re going to get punched in the face,” she said. “I was actually thrown on accident by a tackle and went pretty far. And it was kind of scary.”

Hunger Games' Rue, Amandla Stenberg Talks About Her Role, Suzanne Collins and the Hunger Games Movie

Unfortunately for fans of Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games, the trilogy ended in 2010. But fortunately, the franchise gets a new lease on life with the release of the big-screen version of the first novel on March 23. So far nearly six million fans have watched the trailer for the Hunger Games movie on YouTube (see it on the right sidebar).

Eighth-grader Amandla Stenberg, 13, who portrays Rue in the film, talked with PW reporter Karen Springen (a longtime friend of Amandla’s mother) about reading the books, shooting the post-apocalyptic story, and getting everyone on the set to sign her copy of The Hunger Games.

When did you first read The Hunger Games?

I think I first read the books at the end of sixth grade, two summers ago. I remember everyone in school was talking about them and how amazing they were, and talking about the characters.

Amandla reading The Hunger Games book

Did you picture yourself as Rue?

When I first read the book, I really didn’t picture myself as Rue. Then I read it again, and I did picture myself as her. She’s very musical, and very small like me, and very quick.

How are you musical?

I like to sing. I play guitar, violin, and drums.

Did you read The Hunger Games in one night?

I think it took me about two nights to finish it. I couldn’t put it down, and my nose was in the book the whole time. It’s such a page turner, and Suzanne Collins’s writing is so vivid. Everyone was wondering what I was reading. After I finished it, my dad took it, and then my mom.

How many times have you read the series?

I’ve read the first book at least five times! I never get tired of it.

Had you read it that number of times before filming started?

I read it four times before I started shooting. I read it a fifth time when I learned that I had been cast.

Was Rue your favorite character when you were reading?
Rue and Foxface were my favorite characters, probably because they’re not necessarily bad. I loved Rue because of how musical and sweet she is. Now that I’ve read the book a few times, I actually like the character Clove a lot. She’s very skilled with how she can throw knives. And everyone loves Katniss!
Amandla as Rue in the Training Center

How did you find out about auditioning for the role, and how did you prepare for it?

I heard that they were making a movie, and I already loved Rue. I called my agent repeatedly, saying, ‘Please, please, please get me an audition.’ After my many, many phone calls, they got an audition for me. That was my golden opportunity. I prepared and prepared, and I went in and met with the casting director, Debra Zane, who helped me, before I met with Gary [director Gary Ross].

What did you do to get into character and make yourself feel like Rue?

For my audition, I went to Gary’s house. To get prepared, I dressed up like Rue. I wore khakis and a T-shirt, and my mom had rolled around my clothes in the dirt before. And we put twigs in my hair and leaves all over me, and stains were all over my clothes. And I had a little wreath of flowers in my pocket that I thought Rue might have. That was in my pocket as good luck, and also a special rock. Those were my little tokens I thought Rue would have.

Did you show them to the director?
No, I didn’t. It was kind of like my special secret.
How long after the audition did you learn you got the part?
A couple of very nail-biting weeks!

What kind of physical training did you need to do? Did doing gymnastics in the past help?
I think my smallness helped. I’m quick and light on my feet.

Did you have to take lessons in archery?
Rue doesn’t really have any weapons she uses against anyone. And I was already a tree climber!

How tiny are you now?
I’m 4-[foot]-9, and I weigh about 70 pounds. At the time, I was 4-[foot]-8, and 65 pounds.

How many days was Suzanne Collins on set? And did she give you any pointers on Rue?

She was there for two days in the middle of shooting. It was so amazing to meet her – the creator of all this. We were doing a very traumatic scene, and I was kind of bawling my eyes out. I wasn’t quite sure if this was how Suzanne Collins imagined the scene. And so I talked to her, and she told me just that Rue was trying to be very strong for Katniss. She wanted Katniss to go on, so she tried to be very brave for Katniss. That was very helpful.
Amandla and Suzanne Collins on the set of Hunger Games

So did you cry less?
Yes.

Because you were trying to be brave?
Exactly.

Did Suzanne know you were a huge Hunger Games fan before you were cast?

Yes, I told her how much I loved her writing! I’m so glad I had the honor of meeting her. She was very sweet and wrote a note in my book thanking me for my work in the movie. A lot of the other cast members signed it as well. We were signing each other’s copies like yearbooks.
How many times did you shoot your big scene?
Probably around 15 times. We did it in different ways and different angles.

How did you feel about the violence in the book?
I wouldn’t say the violence is such a big part of the book or the movie. It’s about survival. It’s a warning to the world to not become so desperate and barbaric.

Did everyone read the book during filming?
I don’t think anyone was reading it while we were on set. People were reading the script. Before we started shooting, a lot of the cast members re-read the book. [Jackie Emerson, who played Foxface, read it with her entire school before she was cast.]

What other good books have you read recently?
I’m always reading a book! Right now I’m reading Cleopatra’s Moon. I cannot put it down. It’s about Cleopatra Selene, who was Cleopatra’s only daughter. It’s a very interesting tale about how she loses everything. As soon as I finish Cleopatra’s Moon, I’m going to get Legend by Marie Lu. I’ve heard a lot about it.

I also read the Maze Runner series, another post-apocalyptic story. I’ve read the Mortal Instruments series, I was obsessed with those. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith is one of my favorites. Even though it doesn’t have any monsters or crazy fantasy in it, it’s such a raw story, and I can really relate to the characters. I think it’s a beautiful story. And I read Forge by Laurie Halse Anderson for my summer project for school.

Were the actors all friends even though you didn’t all get along in the storyline?
I don’t think any of our characters’ conflicts were real. We spent so much time together. You’d never think Clove and Rue would be snuggling up together, but we were. We became so close. Even Jack [Quaid, the son of actors Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan], who plays Marvel [the male tribute from District 1], we became so close. And you’d never think that would happen because of what happens in the game. I don’t think the characters hating each other had any effect on our relationships.

Is there anyone on set who was especially fun to meet?
There are so many people I was so psyched to meet. I was so nervous before I met Jen [Jennifer Lawrence, who has the lead role of Katniss Everdeen]. But then I became so relaxed when I got to know her. It’s really rare to have such a great group of people. The cast and crew of this movie were so fantastic.

Have you seen the finished movie?
I haven’t. I’ve seen little snippets here and there, just going into the recording studio for extra sound. Hopefully there will be a screening before the premiere. I’m just another fan who can’t wait to see it. When we were on the set, you couldn’t really tell what the movie is going to look like. Editing and music is such a big part of it.

You don’t even know what the music is going to be?
I know a little bit of it. When I went into the recording studio, they gave me a sneak peek of some of the movie. It’s the same as the trailer that came out — kind of that same feel. A new Taylor Swift song, "Safe and Sound," is already out. We don’t know how it’s going to be used. I love it. It’s really pretty and haunting.

Did Taylor Swift come to the set?
She didn’t! I didn’t even think she was involved with the film until the song was released. I find out everything like everyone else!

How do you think fans will feel about the film?
I think fans will be very, very pleased with the movie. I know from what I’ve shot and from what I’ve seen, it really stays true to what I thought of the book. It really embodies the feel of the book, and it keeps what is really important in the book about Katniss’s emotions and her survival. That’s really important. They did a fantastic job bringing that to life. Everyone involved is very concerned that the fans are happy with it and that they enjoy it.

You’re a fan, and you’re happy with it!
Seeing [scenes] in my mind and seeing them come to life, even if they were slightly different, I could look at them and say, “wow, that’s the cornucopia,” “wow, that’s the training center,” “wow, that’s the arena.” Everything was brought to life so vividly.

Which boy were you rooting for?
I’m kind of conflicted about that. I love the character Gale when Katniss first lived in District 12, and then I loved Peeta when she went in the game. I started to root for Peeta just because I was frustrated with Katniss for kind of mistreating him. Then I was team Peeta at that point. And then at the end I was definitely team Peeta.

You shot the movie in the summer, when there was no school?
Yeah, it was perfect. I started shooting the movie a couple of days after school had ended. I finished shooting three days before school started.

Between seventh and eighth grades?
Yes.

You filmed in North Carolina?
We shot in Asheville and in Charlotte. Asheville is such a beautiful town and so green compared to Los Angeles. It’s also very cool. It’s kind of like a little hippy town. There are all these little shops and libraries and clothes stores. We had so much fun there.

What about your free time?
It kind of ebbed and flowed. The first couple of weeks we had a lot of free time. We were going out and getting sushi and ice cream and going shopping together. Sometimes it would get really busy, and we’d be working, working, working. It really depended.

What makes this novel work so well as a movie?
Viewers and readers become so attached to the characters just because they’re so interesting. We can really relate to them and their emotions. That will translate to the big screen really well.

Hunger Games' Rue (Amandla Stenberg) Talks to PopcornBiz About Her Role

One of the lucky child actresses who has become part of the highly anticipated movie adaptation of the Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins has recently revealed her experiences in getting the role and bonding with her older co-stars on set and behind the scenes. Amandla Stenberg has talked to PopcornBiz:

How seriously did you prepare for the role and try to get into Rue’s head?

I think I’d read the books at least four times, and so I read it a fifth time when I heard that I was cast. I went through and made all these sticky notes, and it was this giant deal. I was always reading the book. I prepared as much as I could and I hope that I did a great job.

Did Rue already happen to be your favorite character from the books?

My two favorite characters were Foxface and Rue. When I read about Rue, at first I didn’t really picture myself as her, but then the more that I read it I thought, ‘Wow. This is an amazing character. It would be such an honor if I got to play her.’ So, I think that’s what really made me so excited about playing her.

How intense did things get for you during filming? Anything you had to work your courage up to do?

I don’t know about that, but there are lots of crazy things in the movie. Once I got stung by bees – not as a part of the movie, but I just got stung! So that was something I had to overcome, but I don’t think that there’s anything that traumatic.

Despite the differences in your ages, did you and your cast mates form a tight bond?

Definitely! We were going to get sushi every night and going swimming. It was super fun. We all learned from each other. We weren’t separated by our ages at all. We just became one big family and I definitely think that all the older actors and actresses that I worked with really became my role models – and also kind of like my big brother and sister figures, too.

How faithful will the film be to the first book?

Well, I’m not even sure because I haven’t seen the movie, but I think it’s pretty phenomenal. We’ll just have to wait and see in March!
