Of Monsters and Men Talks About Their Song in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Soundtrack

Icelandic band Of Monsters and Men was able to gush about their contribution to the official soundtrack of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Their song is entitled Silhouettes. Here's what band member Ragnar þórhallsson can say about the song and their involvment in the franchise.

"We had been traveling for a long time and away from our family and doing something we had never done before, so that was kind of how we related to the story," þórhallsson told MTV News. "So this is all based on our experience."

I think that's stronger than digging into and dissecting the book and writing a song about one scene or something," þórhallsson said. "It's more about the feeling of the whole story."

"A thousand silhouettes/ Dancing on my chest/ No matter where I sleep/ You are haunting me," sings the band's Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir over an increasingly tortured beat.

"Being away from your home and your family and your girlfriend and stuff like that [is hard]," þórhallsson said. "I think this song touches on that. Definitely."

"Writing about what's out there without knowing what's out there. I think now that we've seen what's out there... and how we feel about being away [from home], it kind of turns around a bit. I'm not sure what the next album will sound like....but we know more about the world, so it's probably going to be a lot different from the first, I think. Maybe a bit more personal."

Willow Shields Talks About the Character Development of Prim in Catching Fire

At the recent Kid's Choice Awards from Nickelodeon, Willow Shields has caught up with MTV to talk about Catching Fire, more specifically about her charater Prim, Katniss' younger sister.

Willow on Prim's evolution:

“She’s become a little bit older and more sophisticated,” Willow said of her character, who’s evolution from innocent girl to reluctant revolutionary is a key point in the books. “But she’s still Prim, which is good!”

On growing up with Prim:

She explained, “I’m growing up with that character. I’m almost 13 now, and she’s growing up too, so it works.”

Jena Malone in the Thick for Catching Fire Training

MTV has chatted with Jena Malone, our very own Johanna Mason, during the 2012 Emmy Awards. She mentioned about her excitement and training for Catching Fire.

"I'm very excited as well, it's going to be great," Malone said. "I just love the books so much. I literally read all three in four days and just was crying at the end. I'm really, really excited to be a part of it."

As a fan of Suzanne Collins' bestselling trilogy, the 27-year-old "Sucker Punch" star clearly has an affinity for her tough-cookie character, though she didn't want to talk too much about why she loves playing Johanna.

"Yeah, we'll get into it when there's more to say," Malone said, before adding that she is in the midst of an intense training regimen to get prepared for all the various physical demands required of the role.

"Oh yeah, I'm in the thick of [training] but excited," she said. "I love that kind of stuff. 'Sucker Punch' kind of got me into a regimen and now I kind of crave it."

To Gary Ross from MTV - A Closer Criticism at Hunger Games

MTV was able to point out the weaknesses or the missing spots of the Hunger Games movie. Find out what MTV wants to convey to director Gary Ross and the crew behind the movie. The following can be a good source of inspiration to make a better Catching Fire movie.

'Hunger Games' Postmortem: Five Lessons For 'Catching Fire'

In this week's Hobnobbing, we take a look at how Gary Ross' sequel can build upon the success of the first.

To no one's surprise, the highly anticipated "Hunger Games" opened last week to boffo box-office numbers, all but guaranteeing the second installment in Suzanne Collins' series, "Catching Fire," will set theaters ablaze come November 22, 2013.
Director Gary Ross, who will also helm the follow-up, has already begun formulating his vision for the 75th annual Hunger Games, telling MTV News, "I have some ideas about how to do 'Catching Fire' slightly differently, but I don't want to share them yet. Not because I'm being evasive, but just because they're not fully baked. But yes, I think it will look and feel slightly different from the first.".

With its jungle-like setting, the next arena will be a much different beast than the forested first, so it's no wonder Ross is re-jiggering his approach. We can only speculate that some of his sequel planning will include reviewing "The Hunger Games" in great detail — what worked and what didn't. To that end, we've compiled a list of five "Hunger Games" lessons that can and should inform "Catching Fire."

DO keep the arena underwraps

This one isn't so much for Ross as it is for the Gamemakers at Lionsgate, but we have to recognize the studio's smart decision to use only pre-Games footage in their aggressive marketing campaign for the film. In fact, I'd go so far as to say my favorite parts of the movie were from the arena, largely because they were fresh and unexpected. With the Quarter Quell's intriguing new venue, Lionsgate would be wise to build anticipation by keeping the tropical death trap shrouded in mystery.

DON'T skimp on the CGI

If there was a consistent complaint I heard from "Hunger Games" fans following the film's release, it was that the Girl on Fire scene — in which Katniss and Peeta introduce themselves to the Capitol, riding atop a chariot and flaunting flame-licked jumpsuits representative of their coal-mining home — was ... underwhelming. The flame effect just didn't look real enough. With a slew of new sci-fi aspects introduced in "Catching Fire," including mutated monkeys, we hope Ross can invest a bit more in the film's digital technology.

DO capitalize on Stanley Tucci

Say what you will about Jennifer Lawrence's gripping, gritty performance as Katniss Everdeen, but if anyone could be categorized as the film's scene-stealer, it was most certainly Stanley Tucci, whose blue-haired, big-teethed Caesar Flickerman was nothing short of mesmerizing (and a handy exposition device to boot!). Heck, I'd pay to watch a Caesar Flickerman spin-off once all three (four?) "Hunger Games" films debut. "Caesar Flickerman: Not So Blue." Think about it, Lionsgate.

DON'T downplay the dangers of the arena

Between her 23 fellow tributes, tracker jackers and muttations, Katniss had plenty to contend with in the arena. But, as my roommate so astutely pointed out to me long after I watched the film and didn't notice, we never really see Katniss hungry or thirsty. Limiting the violence for a PG-13 rating is an understandable edit, but why dull down the deadliness of the Games otherwise? In "Catching Fire," we need to see Katniss and her fellow tributes truly struggle, not simply limp along.

DO make artful additions (especially if they're directed by Steven Soderbergh)

By shifting the viewpoint of the film from Katniss' first-person perspective, Ross was able to open up the world of Panem in a way we hadn't experienced before. The addition of the control room, Seneca Crane's implied death by berries and, most notably, the District 11 riot only added to the film.

Seneca Crane's Beard in the Hunger Games Movie Took Two Hours to Groom Everyday

Read the following for MTV News' interview with Wes Bently, the actor who plays the Head Gamemaker Seneca Crane in the Hunger Games.

For those of us who've been following the news surrounding all the comings and goings of the lucky "Hunger Games" castmembers, one of the most intriguing is Wes Bentley in the role of Seneca Crane. Not only does Bentley bring a sense of gravitas to the character, but as we've seen in the released photos, his costume and makeup design is especially interesting.

MTV News recently caught up with the "American Beauty" actor to discuss his pivotal role in the film and how much fun he had sporting that curiously shaped beard, which, sadly, he no longer has.

"I would have loved to have kept the beard but that beard took two hours to groom every day," Bentley said. "I don't want to spend that much time in the bathroom."

We then brought up the fact that the beard has caused quite a stir among fans, spawning its own Facebook page as well as our own tongue-in-cheek interview with the fancy fuzz.

"I saw that. I had no idea my beard was so clever," Bentley said of the interview, adding that he is flattered by all the attention the beard has received. "It's such a cool look. Ve Neill, the makeup designer, did such an amazing job. It's exciting that it's getting that kind of attention."
Bentley insisted that all the credit for the design of the beard goes to Neill, and that all he did was grow out everything as much as it could go.

"I usually come to set with a beard and my hair as long as I can get it so there are options. I saw Ve before we started shooting and she was excited I had a beard because she had something special in mind. It was all her. She went at it for like three hours trying to find the right shape; it was cool."
Bentley joked that having the peculiar design on his face did half of his acting work for him and that he sometimes wishes he kept it.
"The beard did half the work," he joked, later admitting that he got a few curious glances whenever he ventured out to run errands during filming.
"I did go into Target a few times late at night with the beard, because my son was there, it was a little odd buying baby formula with this beard and some of the makeup on."

Tracker Jacker Scene - The Most Difficult Hunger Games Scene to Shoot According to Director Gary Ross

Here is the continuation of MTV News' interview with Director Gary Ross.

Now that we've had time to digest Ross' revelation that there will be no Katniss voice-over in the upcoming film based on Suzanne Collins' best-selling dystopian novel, it's time to head into full-on spoiler territory with a discussion of the most complicated scenes in the film. (Please heed this very emphatic SPOILER ALERT for those who haven't read the books.)

"The tracker jacker sequence was one, that's a vertical sequence literally staged over 100 vertical feet," Ross said when asked which scenes that required the most care and consideration. "You have the Careers on the ground, you have Katniss up in one level of a tree, you have Rue up in another tree over here, you have the tracker jacker nest up here, and the crew is going up and down the tree the entire time," he explained of a particularly intense scene set during the actual Games. "You have all these different axes to cut together into one suspenseful sequence, and you have CG insects, so this is not for the faint of heart. I think my shot list for that was 110 setups. We're building scaffolding in the forest this was shot practically in trees. None of this was shot on a computer, so that was a daunting sequence that required a lot of attention."

In addition to the challenges involved in the action-oriented sequences like the Tribute Parade and Katniss' big "Girl on Fire" moment, Ross admitted that several of the "intimate acting moments" required the most attention.

"There's a huge responsibility in shooting the death of Rue and what that means and the way Katniss honors that death by creating a memorial and the act of defiance that's inherent in that and how that becomes a pivotal moment," he said. "The moment when she's about to eat the berries with Peeta at the end, these are moments when you get up on that day and you go, 'OK, it's berry day,' " he added with a laugh. "Stanley Kubrick had this great line; he said, 'The toughest part of directing is getting out of the car in the morning.' I'm so happy with [Rue's death scene] and the Reaping."

Hunger Games Director Gary Ross on the Tracker Jacker Scene

MTV News' interview with the Hunger Games movie director features the latter's reaction to the tracker jacker scene. See the video below:

From MTV News:

Among this nasty creature collective is a super species of wasp known as tracker jackers, whose venomous stings cause hallucination and even death. Yet, despite their killer instincts, the insects end up playing an important role in Katniss' survival, all the while posing one of the biggest filming challenges to director Gary Ross.

"That's a vertical sequence, literally staged over 100 vertical feet," Gary said, explaining the difficulties of the sequence. "You have the careers on the ground. You have Katniss on one level in a tree, and you have Rue in another tree up here. You have the tracker jacker nest up here, and the crew is going up and down this tree the entire time, and you have all these axis to cut together into one taut, suspenseful sequence. And you have CG insects. This is not for the faint of heart. I think my shot list was like 110 set-ups or something like that. We're building scaffolding. This was shot practically in trees—none of this was shot on the computer. That was a daunting and challenging sequence that required a lot of attention."

However, for all its technical difficulties, Gary said the scenes that required the most attention were the quieter, emotional moments between the characters (like a certain tribute's tearful death). Click play on the video above to hear more from Gary on that Game-changing, gut-wrenching moment.

MTV's Last Round of Interview with Hunger Games Movie Trio

Here is the last round of interview by MTV News to Hunger Games movie's Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. Enjoy.

@: Music plays a big part in the HG. What type of music inspires you and why?

Josh Hutcherson: Music is a huge part of my life. If I feel off for a couple of days, chances are I've not been listening to enough music — it's that important to me. But I listen to everything from '60s rock and roll to the Arctic Monkeys to the Black Keys to dubstep, so it's literally full-on schizophrenic, my music taste.

Jennifer Lawrence: I was just listening to Mumford & Sons on the way up here — love Mumford, the
Black Keys, Jack White. I'm really looking forward to the musical part of the movie; T-Bone Burnett is producing it, and he's the best in the world, so I'm really looking forward to that.

Liam Hemsworth: One of my favorite bands is Coldplay; I love Coldplay. I love a lot of old school rock too — Pink Floyd, Guns N' Roses — I love that stuff. Music is a great way to get in a good headspace if you have an intense scene or any kind of scene. There's always some kind of music that can help you feel and get in to that kind of headspace.

@: Was it hard to balance Katniss' inner vulnerability with the strength she's forced to adopt in the horrors of the arena?

Lawrence: Wow, what a question. Let's see, I think everybody has vulnerability and strength. I think she's vulnerable anyway, like all of the tributes, because none of them really want to be there. They're chosen randomly, they're all forced into the arena. She gathers strength, she has to fight to survive. She's promised her sister that she would come back, so she replaces her vulnerability with strength.

@: How was it to be "on fire" in the chariots?

Lawrence: Oh, that was fake. I wasn't actually on fire, thank God. ... I think they'll just add that later, hopefully.

@: In a postapocalyptic world like Panem, what would your most valuable survival skill be?

Hemsworth: I'd hope that I could shoot like Katniss. That would probably help a lot. I can't, though.

@: From the trailer alone, the fans already see the amazing chemistry between [Katniss and Peeta]. Was that an instant thing?

Hutcherson: It really was. Jennifer and I hit it off right away, as did myself and Liam. Jennifer and I are kind of from the same part of the country, we had a similar upbringing, the same kind of system, more or less. She's just a very real person, and you don't meet many actresses that are super real and down to earth and genuine and are extremely talented on top of all that, so she kind of has the whole thing going on, and she's an awesome person. I really hit it off with her.

Hunger Games Movie Cast Interview Continuation by MTV

From MTV:

Last week, Lawrence, Hutcherson and Hemsworth revealed a few of the pranks pulled on set, as well as a preview of what the arena will look like onscreen. This second installment features talk about which actor is most like his or her character, details about the reaping and talk of real-life survival skills. (Minor spoilers ahead for those who haven't read Suzanne Collins' brilliant books!)

Be sure to check back here next week for part three of our interviews.

Josh Hutcherson

@RealOrNotReal: Who among the cast is most like their "Hunger Games" character?

Josh Hutcherson: Oh, God, this is going to sound so stupid: Me, because I have literally never read a character, book or script or anything that has a character in it I connected with more than Peeta. I feel like so much of who I am is Peeta. It drove me crazy during the audition process, because I was like, "This is so me, it hurts. If I don't get this, I'm not even good at being me, so now what am I? I have no idea what to do next."

@eringabin: In a postapocalyptic world, what would your most valuable survival skill be?

Hutcherson: I think I'd be pretty good at building a fort. I have a lot of experience with that when I was a kid. I built a lot of forts back in the day, so I think my expertise would be in the architecture and design of our shelter.

@eringabin: Did you get any injuries during filming?

Hutcherson: Not anything too crazy in the injury department. There were the classic bumps and bruises from running through the woods and forest, the big fight scene at the end with myself and Katniss and Cato on top of the Cornucopia, which itself lends itself to having more injuries than other times, but it was pretty good all in all, nothing too serious.

Jennifer Lawrence

@RealOrNotReal: Who among the cast is most like their "Hunger Games" character?

Jennifer Lawrence: Josh. Josh is Peeta. He's charming, he's nice, he's very real and down to earth, he's not fake in any way. He just can charm anyone and anything.

@HGTribute_Manda: What was the most difficult scene to shoot?

Lawrence: I don't know if I have a most difficult scene. Really, the physical scenes, the running. Katniss doesn't really stop running throughout the whole movie, so if I'm running up a mountain in a scene, that's what we shot all day, so by the time we started acting and talking, it was like a vacation.

Liam Hemsworth

@HGTribute_Manda: What was the most difficult scene to shoot?

Liam Hemsworth: The reaping stuff that we shot was pretty hard. I remember turning up to set the first day and looking out at the few hundred extras there — it looked like a prison camp. It looked so rough and really did look how I think it would be, and it was hot. It was some of the hottest weather I've ever shot in. We had extras collapsing because it was so hot out there. That was probably the hardest stuff to shoot for sure.

@p1nklov3er: Is it hard to hide your accent?

Hemsworth: It gets easier and easier. I work with accent coaches a lot and try to do my best to get the Australian out of there. Australians grow up with a lot of American TV; we watch the same movies you watch, so it's not as alien for an Australian to do an American accent as it is for an American to do an Australian accent, because you guys don't grow up hearing our accents. It's in the back of your mind, but it's practice, practice, practice.

@OttoRivera: Have you met Suzanne Collins?

Hemsworth: I haven't met her, but I've spoken to her on the phone a few times, and she's really, really lovely. She's obviously tremendously smart, and I love her books, so she's been a big part of collaborating on the script. ... I think everyone involved in the production wanted it to be true to the story, so she's been involved a lot.

Hunger Games Movie Cast Interview by MTV-- Josh Hutcherson, Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth

Here is an article, awesome article, from MTV.  MTV released an exclusive interview of the three main lead of the upcoming adaptation of the Hunger Games including Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss), Josh Hutcherson (Peeta), and Liam Hemsworth (Gale). See the videos below and if you can't, just read on the text below, it's transcribed from the interview.

Learn what the stars have to say about the pranks during filming, their most excited scenes and a lot more. Warning: SPOILERS ahead.

Josh Hutcherson

@jjussan: I've heard a lot about pranking on the set... tell us one of the things that happened!

Josh Hutcherson: They had a full life-sized dummy of one of our tributes that had gotten killed by a Tracker Jacker, and basically it's all swollen and gnarly-looking and mangled, and Jennifer was out of her trailer so I took the dummy and put it inside her bathroom in her trailer. I wasn't there for the big moment when she saw it, which I can't believe I missed, but I've been told that she actually peed her pants in reaction to it. So, I was pretty proud of myself and amazed that someone actually peed their pants in fear, because I didn't know that happened.

@PRIMdelenaTVD: What can you tell us about the arena? What was it like?

Hutcherson: The arena is a giant. It's a forest, pretty much. We shot it in the mountains of North Carolina, just outside of Asheville, and it's pretty cool. The terrain we had to get through to get our cameras and equipment there was impressive that we even got it made in time. It looks amazing on film, too.

@HGTribute_Manda:What's the most difficult scene to shoot?

Hutcherson:The cave scene for me, where Katniss and Peeta are in the cave after Katniss has rescued Peeta more or less, was tough to shoot, also my favorite scene to shoot because we didn't have a lot of time. We had a lot of scene to get through and a lot of character arc to get through, so for me that was really fun but also a really big challenge.

Jennifer Lawrence

@jjussan: I've heard a lot about pranking on the set... tell us one of the things that happened!

Jennifer Lawrence: Pranks. Oh yeah, Josh, he took the dummy from one of the tributes that dies from the Tracker Jackers' sting that is completely deformed and put it on my toilet, shut the door and [had it] holding a toilet paper roll, just for added effect. I'm in my trailer and open the bathroom door and scream and my friend grabs me and had to say "It's fake, it's fake, it's fake!" I hate him. I still haven't gotten him back for that, actually. I don't know what to do to get him back for something like that. I'd have to find a real dead body.

@OttoRivera: Have you met Suzanne Collins?

Lawrence: I have, she's wonderful. That was, I think, the most nervous I've ever been meeting a person because I kept thinking, "What if she doesn't like me?" But I did meet her, and she's fantastic.

@eringabin: Did you get any injuries during filming?

Lawrence: Yeah. There was the trees, there was tree climbing, getting scratched up by trees. My back started getting weird, I think from all the running downhill, so I had to go to the chiropractor once a week, which is terrifying . I've never been to a chiropractor before and it just feels like they're going to snap your neck at any moment. There were some ankle and knee [injuries] but you don't have time to be injured. The look on the producer's face if I say "ow" is awful, so I tried to just kind of stay quiet about it.

Liam Hemsworth

@jjussan: I've heard a lot about pranking on the set... tell us one of the things that happened!

Liam Hemsworth: Jennifer would often try and make you laugh just before "Action." She'd say something funny. She'd get you and really surprise you, though, because you'd be rolling up, ready for them to say "Action," and she'd ask you some silly question about something. You'd hear it and be like, "Wait, what?" And then "Action" and you'd be like "OK. Thanks for that." It's funny to her, I guess.

What's more, "Twilight" stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson -- whose characters Bella and Edward finally wed in "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn-Part 1" -- lost out as best on-screen couple to Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, who played Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows-Part 2."
